A State Championship Remembered

By Nate Johnnie, senior & lacrosse player

EXCELLENCE INSPIRES US.

The 2016 lacrosse season started off with Beaverton High School talking about how great the 2016 season was going to be for them. The Beavers set the hardest preseason schedule in the state which included West Linn, back-to-back defending state champions, and Lakeridge, who was the runner-up two years in a row. The boys knew we had to prepare for the hardest games we would encounter in our high school careers. The season continued on, and we took down West Linn on our own field with a 9-8 score, but lost to Lake Ridge 12-11. We then continued on to play OES a few days after Lakeridge and lost again. After that tough week of games, we didn’t lose again during our Metro League conference play. Our conference play consisted of Jesuit, Southridge, Sunset, Aloha, and Westview. The 2016 season was the first season ever that Beaverton High School had won and swept the Metro League!

The post-season began with a game against Glencoe. Beaverton had no issues taking down Glencoe with a 19-4  victory. Round 2 of playoffs consisted of Beaverton playing Sunset to a very close game. In my opinion, Beaverton and Sunset were the two best teams in the state. The game was taken into overtime with a score of 5-5. The game was won by Beaverton with a Goal by Anthony kerkar, assisted by myself, Nate Johnnie. In the semifinals, Beaverton was matched up with Lakeridge, who we lost to earlier in the season. An entire week of hard practices and focus led up to this game. The first half was a great game. We went into halftime tied with the Pacers, but we came into the second half with a new mindset. The game ended with a score of 17-12 with the Beavers on top and ready to face Jesuit in the State Championship.

The State Championship took place on Saturday, June 4th. The game started with us going down by 2 immediately. We continued to fight from behind the entire game. We tied the game up with about 8 minutes left, off of my “garbage goal.” Then, we took the lead by 1. Beaverton High School were your 2016 Lacrosse State Champions!

Looking forward, it is hard not to be THRILLED for the upcoming 2017 season.
